You've heard of physical therapy, chemical therapy, and psychotherapy. Add behavioral therapy and Home Therapy, and all your problems are solved. Right? Wrong!
Now, author Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan introduces the "Eight-Step Home Cure" for a home that doesn't work in his book, Apartment Therapy.

There's no question that the atmosphere you live and work in influences your attitude about life. Even specific colors have different effects on people's feelings about their personal situation.

Gillingham-Ryan addresses furniture placement with terms such as Bowling Alley Syndrome and Movie Theater Syndrome. Using basic design techniques, he offers simple solutions to create better flow of traffic that is more pleasing to the eye.

With the Eight-Week Cure, all aspects of room renovation are addressed, starting with the fact that most people "are unhappy with the places we live in." He analyzes what makes a home "work" and what makes it healthy.

Step One includes analyzing your home, determining old "energy and emotion," and letting go of the past. By seeing your home in a new light, you open yourself up to the idea of change. Once this is done, you can begin to have a new vision, set goals, and establish a budget.

Each step along the way deals with the "bones, breath, heart, and head" of the room and guides the reader through the "healing process."

If you buy the theory (and I do) that your living space has a great influence on your attitude and emotions, this approach to home renovation makes a lot of sense.

With a commitment of 8 weeks to realize "the cure," your home, large or small, will be more emotionally supportive, have better traffic flow, and offer you a truly comfortable retreat.
